Just Another Love Story (Kærlighed på film)
Wed 16 – Thu 17 Sept
Ole Bornedal, Denmark 2007, Danish with English subtitles. Certificate 18.

Cast: Anders W Berthelsen, Rebecka Hemse, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Charlotte Fich, Dejan Cukic Contrived excess is rarely as entertaining as it is in the ironically titled Just Another Love Story, a frenzied noirish romantic thriller from Danish writer-director Ole Bornedal. The film kicks off with three ‘love scenes’, played in rapid succession: In the first, a man lies bleeding to death on a rainy street while a woman weeps over him.

In the second, a middle-aged husband and wife enjoy some playful pillow talk, and in the third, two young lovers are involved in a tense standoff with a gun. The connection between these three snapshots – as well as the implicit connection between passionate romance and violence – will be made clear by the film’s end…

Sankt Hans Evening, June 20th at 7pm

Venue: Dalmeny Estate
After suffering possibly the worst Skt. Hans weather ever last year, we hope we are in for a dry spell as the lovely beach on Dalmeny Estate will provide a fantastic setting for our Skt Hans celebrations with the ritual burning of witches and midges!
As usual, BBQ food is served and drinks will be on sale at the event. All you have to do is bring blankets/picnic chairs and perhaps a copy of Højskolesangbogen. We do recommend waterproof clothing… just in case!!!

Price: £6 for adults and £3 for children over 5, but do let us know beforehand of any ‘hungry’ children under 5. Please sign up by returning the cut-off slip below before 6th June.

Please go to the car park at Dalmeny House and follow the signs from there.

How to find Dalmeny House:
From Edinburgh: take A90 northbound (towards Forth Road Bridge). Turn off slip road signposted for South Queensferry. The main entrance to Dalmeny Estate is approx. ½ mile up this road, on your right. Enter through main entrance and follow tarmac road until you see Dalmeny House and car park on your left.
From Fife: After Forth Road Bridge, take 1st slip road signposted for South Queensferry. At roundabout, take first left. At next roundabout (Burger King), take 1st left into South Queensferry. Take 4th right (Station Road) and carry on to T-junction at the end of this road. Turn right up to T-junction in Dalmeny Village, then turn left and continue until you reach the crossroads at main entrance to Dalmeny Estate.

Film afternoon: Flammen & Citronen

Friday, March 6th, 2009

15th March 2.30 pm
Venue: Danish Cultural Institute, 3 Doune Terrace, Edinburgh

Flammen & Citronen – A film by Ole Christian Madsen
Featuring: Mads Mikkelsen, Peter Mygind, Thure Lindhart and Stine Stengade

Copenhagen, 1944, during the German occupation. While the rest of Denmark hope and pray for the war to end soon, Police Superintendent Winther (Peter Mygind) ensures that the most efficient operatives in the famous Holger Danske resistance group, known as “Flammen” (Thure Lindhardt) and “Citronen” (Mads Mikkelsen), are kept busy at every opportunity.
But when Flammen is ordered to execute his girlfriend Ketty (Stine Stengade), his convictions to the cause start to falter. In the fight for a free country, the lines between right and wrong are easily blurred, and it becomes ever more difficult to tell your friends and enemies apart…

Based on actual events, Flammen og Citronen is one of the most successful Danish films ever. With a hard-hitting and controversial storyline, the film takes a more balanced view on wartime Denmark to offer a fresh and different perspective, while the sublime acting and spectacular quality of production raise standards to new levels. Flammen og Citronen has it all: breathtaking pace, nerve-racking tension, love stories and plenty of action. Quite simply a world-class piece, straight from the heart of Danish history.
